Worms Treatment – Review of Common Cat Worms

Feline Worms and Treatment –  A Review

Have a cat?  Or a dog for that matter.

You’ll likely find worms. Ick, right?

Hey…a fact of life.   —  So how to deal?

Feline treatment at home for worms in your cats begins with good sanitation.  Sanitary practices inside and outside of your home will go far in protecting your cat and your family from infestation with worms.

While worms may not be deadly – usually – they can sap the health of your cat, so treating them is wise. Fragile kittens, however, can be affected far more severely. If infestation is severe, the results can be debilitating or life-threatening for kittens – as well as for your adult cats..

Kittens, especially, are prone to worm infestation. Their immune systems are not yet fully developed and as developing infants, are weaker, and thus more susceptible to harm. Worms are so common, that your vet will always expect to see a stool sample for the annual check up at least.

Worms are Parasites – Vampires Within

vampireWormsrare cases, heartworms. Lungworms and ringworm are also found in cats, but ringworm is not a worm…it is an external fungal parasite, affecting the cat’s skin and fur — and it is contagious, and can be passed on not only to other pets in your household (dogs, horses, cows and othe are parasitic and reside in your cat or kitten’s intestine, feeding their fill off their innocent hosts. The main ‘vampires’ of the worm family seen in cats are tapeworms, roundworms, hook worm, and in r livestock can also pass it on to other species), but to you as well.

If you have a multi-cat household that share the same living and toilet quarters, worm infestation in one cat will likely be found in another. Therefore, all are usually treated. A stool sample from one cat is usually sufficient to diagnose for the household.

The Worm Review – Most Common Worms needing Feline Treatment

Roundworms are the most commonly found worm parasite, while tapeworm is also quite prevalent. If your cat or kitten is otherwise healthy, but just seems none-the-less lackluster, with a poor, dull coat, has gas or diarrhea or exhibits a pot belly, suspect roundworms. Roundworms can only be detected microscopically in a stool sample, but sometimes are vomited up and can be seen as spaghetti-like organisms. This usually indicates a strong, serious infestation.

Adult cats develop a natural immunity to this parasite as they grow older and usually suffer less illness and less severe infestations. As noted, this parasite is common in kittens and protocol is to worm kittens two to three times even if fecal tests show negative. A mother cat may show no signs of infestation, yet can pass roundworms to her kittens, as they may lie dormant in the adult mother cat. But adult cats can and do become infected with these dastardly organisms, so don’t overlook the possibility nor fail to keep your cat checked out.

Note that roundworms CAN be passed on to humans. Always wash your hands and under the fingernails after handling your cat, other pets or any animal, and when working in the garden or outdoors. Teach your children to do the same…and keep fingers out of the mouth and away from your face.

    Fleas are Foes

If your cat harbors fleas, suspect immediately it may also be infested with tapeworm, since fleas are hosts for tapeworms and pass them on to your cats. Worms treatment for tapeworm requires tandem fleas treatment. Not only do you need to combat those dastardly fleas that are on your cat, but also those shed invisibly in your household, including their eggs and larvae. If your cat is allowed protected sojourns outdoors, the areas she frequents also need to be treated or the flea will continue its life cycle ad infinitum. If fleas are not eliminated in all their life stages, in all areas where your cat (- or dog- or other pet) frequents, tapeworm will likely reinfest your cat.  An irritating cycle.

Tapeworms can often be seen in the cat’s feces or as tiny rice-like segements around the cat’s anus. As a cat grooms itself, it is likely to ingest fleas that have eaten tapeworm eggs, thus becoming infested with the parasite and passing them along to your cat. Tapeworms take up residence in the cat’s gut. While these parasites usually don’t produce any detectable signs of illness, your cat may begin exhibiting excessive licking habits due to irritation of its anal area. Without thorough fleas treatment of cat and environment, tapeworms will likely return, even if you have given worms treatment. Note:  Your cat does not get tapeworms by ingesting the worms, as gross as that is, but from ingesting the flea that carries the parasite.

Hookworms can be particularly harmful to kittens, sucking blood while attached to the kitten’s intestine, causing anemia due to blood loss. Intestinal bleeding, diarrhea and even death can result if infestations go untreated. The kittens’ growth can also be stunted. If your cat is treated for roundworms, it is usually covered for hookworms as well, as available pet medications usually handles both parasites for worms treatment.

Heartworms are more difficult to detect in a cat than a dog, and must be done via a blood test. Unfortunately, no single reliable blood test yet exists for a cat… nor is there a totally safe worms treatment for cats currently in the US. A variety of tests are taken together to help determine heartworm infestation in a cat.

The good news is that cats are less often infected by heartworm than a dog, since cats are not natural hosts and are therefore more resistant.. Recent thinking suggests, however, that it is likely that cats have been dying of heartworm far more than we know, since no simple detection is available.  Heartworm is found in all 50 States.

Additionally, feline heartworm disease is often more severe than in dogs. One single adult heartworm that has found its way into a cat can result in very serious consequences.

mosquitoHeartworm is spread to your cat or dog via mosquito bites.

It is now understood, that in most cases, a cat contracts heartworm only if bitten by a mosquito that has fed from a dog with heartworms. So your dog can pass along its fleas to your cat, and if your dog has contracted heartworm, it may pass it on to your cat.

Preventive medications applied monthly to the skin can be used for prevention, which can be superior to trying to cure the disease.. Statistics show that around 70% of cats die while being treated.

Lungworms often go undetected until there is a severe infestation, which results in coughing and difficult breathing. Free-roaming cats and felines allowed to hunt outdoors can be infected with this respiratory parasite by eating the snails and slugs or crayfish that host the parasite, or the birds and small animals that eat them as well. Fecal examination as well as other tests are needed to properly diagnose lungworm infestation in your cat before proper worms treatment can be prescribed.

These most common cat worms can be treated with a regimen of medications, some requiring more than one application. Homeopathic applications for treatment are also available for treatment of different worms.  Early detection is always best.

watchful eyeKeeping an observant eye on your cat — again — knowing your feline friend — is one of the most fundamental tools in your feline treatment toolbox for worms treatment.
